How to Write in Chinese – A Beginner’s Guide. You probably think learning how to write in Chinese is impossible. I’m a native English speaker, and biology gcse coursework, I know how complex Chinese characters seem. But you’re about to learn that it’s not impossible . I’ve teamed up with Kyle Balmer from Sensible Chinese to show you how you can learn the basic building blocks of the Chinese written language, and build your Chinese vocabulary quickly. First, you’ll learn the basics of how the Chinese written language is constructed. Then, you’ll get a step-by-step guide for how to examples write Chinese characters sensibly and systematically . Wondering how it can be so easy? Then let’s get into it. Chinese is a complex language with many dialects and varieties. Before we dive in, let’s just take a second to biology be clear exactly what we’ll be talking about.

First, you’ll be learning about Mandarin Chinese , the narrative essay “standard” dialect. There are 5 mains groups of dialects and perhaps 200 individual dialects in China Taiwan. Mandarin Chinese is the “standard” used in Beijing and spoken or understood, by 2/3 of the population. Second, there are two types of Chinese characters: Traditional and Simplified . In this article, we’ll be talking about Simplified Chinese characters, which are used in biology photosynthesis the majority of Mainland China. There is an ongoing politicised debate about the two kinds of characters, and those asking themselves: “Should I learn traditional or simplified Chinese characters?” can face a difficult choice. For more on difference between Simplified and Traditional characters read this article To learn more about essay “the debate” read this excellent Wikipedia article If you want to switch Simplified characters into Traditional, you might like the biology coursework fantastic New Tong Wen Tang browser plugin. First Steps in Learning Chinese Characters. When learning a European language, you have certain reference points that give you a head start. If you are learning French and see the word l’hotel , for example, you can take a pretty good guess what it means!

You have a shared alphabet and shared word roots to college essay fall back on. In Chinese this is not the case. When you’re just starting out, every sound, character, and word seems new and unique. Learning to read Chinese characters can feel like learning a whole set of completely illogical, unconnected “squiggles”! The most commonly-taught method for gcse photosynthesis, learning to blog read and write these “squiggles” is gcse coursework rote learning. Just write them again and critical essay, again until they stick in your brain and your hand remembers how to write them! This is an outdated approach, much like reciting multiplication tables until they “stick”. I learnt this way. Most Chinese learners learnt this way. It’s painful…and sadly discourages a lot of learners.

However, there is a better way. Even without any common reference points between Chinese and English, the secret is to use the basic building blocks of Chinese, and use those building blocks as reference points from which to grow your knowledge of gcse coursework, written Chinese. This article will: Outline the different levels of structure inherent in manufacturing company plan Chinese characters Show you how to build your own reference points from coursework photosynthesis, scratch How to essay fahrenheit 451 build up gradually without feeling overwhelmed. The basic structure of written Chinese is as follows: I like to think of Chinese like Lego… it’s very “square”! The individual bricks are the components (also known as radicals ).

We start to snap these components together to get something larger – the characters. We can then snap characters together in order to make Chinese words. Here’s the really cool part about Chinese: Each of these pieces, at every level, has meaning. The component, the biology coursework character, the essay 451 word… they all have meaning. This is different to photosynthesis a European language, where the “pieces” used to make up words are letters.

Letters by themselves don’t normally have meaning and narrative examples, when we start to clip letters together we are shaping a sound rather than connecting little pieces of meaning. This is a powerful difference that comes into play later when we are learning vocabulary. Let’s look at the diagram again. Here we start with the component ?. This has the gcse coursework meaning of “child/infant”. The character ? (“good”) is the apa citation for doctoral next level. Look on biology coursework the right of the character and you’ll see ?. The Sioux? We would say that ? is biology gcse coursework photosynthesis a component of ?. Now look at the full word ?? (“Hello”). Notice that the how warlike were ? is biology gcse photosynthesis still there.

The character ? is built of the components ? and ?. The character ? is built from ? + ?. The word ?? in turn is constructed out of ? + ?. Here’s the complete breakdown of that word in an easy-to-read diagram: Now look at this photo of this in education essay outline real life ! Don’t worry if you can’t understand it. Just look for some shapes that you have seen before. The font is a little funky, so here are the typed characters: ???. What components have you seen before?

Did you spot them? Why Character Components are So Important. One of the big “scare stories” around Chinese is that there are 50,000 characters to learn. Now, this is true. But learning them isn’t half as bad as you think.

Firstly, only a few thousand characters are in coursework photosynthesis general everyday use so that number is a lot more manageable. Second, and were, more importantly, those 50,000 characters are all made up of the same 214 components . And you already know one of biology gcse coursework photosynthesis, them: ? (it’s one of those 214 components). The fact that you can now recognise the ? in the image above is critical essay a huge step forward. You can already recognise one of the gcse photosynthesis 214 pieces all characters are made up of. Even better is the fact that of fahrenheit, these 214 components it’s only the 50-100 most common you’ll be running into again and again.

This makes Chinese characters a lot less scary . Once you get a handle on biology gcse photosynthesis these basic components, you’ll quickly recognise all the smaller pieces and your eyes will stop glazing over! This doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily know the meaning or how to pronounce the critical fahrenheit words yet (we’ll get onto gcse coursework photosynthesis, this shortly) but suddenly Chinese doesn’t seem quite so alien any more. Memorising the Components of Chinese Characters. Memorising the pieces is not as important as simply realising that ALL of manufacturing company, Chinese is constructed from these 214 pieces. When I realised this, Chinese became a lot more manageable and I hope I’ve saved you some heartache by revealing this early in your learning process!

Here are some useful online resources for photosynthesis, learning the components of Chinese characters: TAKEAWAY : Every single Chinese character is composed of how warlike the sioux, just 214 “pieces”. Only 50-100 of these are commonly used. Biology Gcse Coursework Photosynthesis? Learn these pieces first to plan learn how to write in Chinese quickly. Moving From Components to biology Characters. Once you’ve got a grasp of the college essay examples basic building blocks of Chinese it’s time to biology photosynthesis start building some characters! We used the character ? (“good”) in college essay examples the above example. ? is coursework photosynthesis a character composed of the components ? (“woman”) and ? (“child”). Unlike the letters of the alphabet in English, these components have meaning . (They also have pronunciation, but for the sake of simplicity we’ll leave that aside for now!) When they are put together, ? and ? become ? …and the meaning is “good”. When learning how to write in Chinese characters you can take advantage of the fact that components have their own meanings.

In this case, it is relatively easy to essay 451 make a mnemonic (memory aid) that links the idea of biology coursework, a woman with her baby as “good”. Because Chinese is apa citation for doctoral dissertations so structured, these kind of mnemonics are an incredibly powerful tool for memorisation. Some characters, including ?, can also be easily represented graphically. ShaoLan’s book Chineasy does a fantastic job of this. Here’s the image of ? for instance – you can see the mother and child. Visual graphics like these can really help in learning Chinese characters.

Unfortunately, only around 5% of the characters in Chinese are directly “visual” in this way. These characters tend to get the biology gcse coursework photosynthesis most attention because they look great when illustrated. However, as you move beyond the technical essay outline concrete in gcse coursework the more abstract it becomes harder and harder to visually represent ideas. Thankfully, the ancient Chinese had an how warlike were the sioux essay, ingenious solution, a solution that actually makes the biology gcse photosynthesis language a lot more logical and simple than merely adding endless visual pictures. The Pronunciation of college, Chinese Characters. The solution was the incredibly unsexy sounding… (wait for biology coursework photosynthesis, it…) “phono-semantic compound character”. It’s an awful name, so I’m going to call them “sound-meaning characters” for outline, now! This concept is the key to unlocking 95% of the Chinese characters. A sound-meaning character has a component that tells us two things:

So, in simple terms: 95% of Chinese characters have a clue to the meaning of the character AND how it is pronounced. This character is made of gcse, two components. College Essay Examples? On the left is ? and on the right is biology ?. These are two of the 214 components that make up all characters. ? means “to arrive” and ? means “knife”. Any idea which one gives us the meaning? Yup – it’s ?, “to arrive”! (That was an easy one #128578; ) But how about the ?? This is where it gets interesting. ? is pronounced dao.

?, “knife” is pronounced dao. The reason the ? is placed next to ? in the character ? is just to tell us how to pronounce the character! How cool is that? Now, did you notice the company plan little lines above the gcse words: dao and dao? Those are the tone markers, and in this case they are both slightly different. These two characters have different tones so they are not exactly the same pronunciation. However, the essay sound-meaning compound has got us 90% of the way to being able to pronounce the character, all because some awesome ancient Chinese scribe thought there should be a shortcut to help us remember the pronunciation!

Let’s look at a few more examples of how ? is used in different words to give you an idea of the coursework pronunciation. Sometimes the examples sound-meaning character gives us the exact sound and meaning . Sometimes it gets us in biology the ballpark . Sometimes it is way off because the character has changed over education the last 5,000 years! Nevertheless, there’s a clue about the pronunciation in 95% of all Chinese characters, which is a huge help for learning how to biology gcse coursework speak Chinese. TAKEAWAY : Look at the component parts as a way to unlock the meaning and pronunciations of 95% of Chinese characters. The Sioux Essay? In terms of “hacking” the language, this is the key to learning how to write in biology photosynthesis Chinese quickly. First we went from components to characters.

Next, we are going from characters to manufacturing business words. Although there are a lot of one-character words in biology coursework photosynthesis Chinese, they tend to either be classically-rooted words like “king” and “horse” or grammatical particles and pronouns. The vast majority of Chinese words contain two characters. The step from characters to words is where, dare I say it, Chinese gets easy! Come on, you didn’t think it would always be hard did you? #128578; Unlike European languages Chinese’s difficulty is essay examples very front-loaded. When you first study how to write in Chinese, you’ll be confronted with a foreign pronunciation system, a foreign tonal system and a very foreign writing system.

As an English speaker, you can normally have a good shot at pronouncing and biology coursework, reading words in other European languages, thanks to the shared alphabet. Chinese, on the other hand, sucker-punches you on day one… but gets a little more gentle as you go along. One you’ve realised these things: there aren’t that many components to deal with all characters are made up of company, these basic components words are actually characters bolted together. …then it’s a matter of just memorising a whole bunch of stuff! That’s not to biology coursework photosynthesis say there isn’t a lot of work involved, only to say that it’s not particularly difficult. Time-consuming, yes. Essay? Difficult, no. This is photosynthesis quite different from European languages, which start off easy, but quickly escalate in difficulty as you encounter complicated grammar, tenses, case endings, technical vocabulary and so on.

Making words from Chinese characters you already know is for doctoral easy and really fun . Coursework? This is where you get to start snapping the lego blocks together and build that Pirate Island! Here are some wonderful examples of the simplicity and logic of Chinese using the character ? which roughly translates as “vehicle”. ? +? Water + Vehicle = Waterwheel ?+? Wind + Vehicle = Windmill ?+? Electric + Vehicle = Tram/Trolley ?+? Fire + Vehicle = Train ?+? Gas + Vehicle = Car ?+? Horse + Vehicle = Horse and cart/Trap and Pony ?+? = Up + Vehicle = Get into/onto a vehicle ?+? = Down + Vehicle = Get out/off a vehicle ?+? = Vehicle + Warehouse = Garage ?+? = To Stop + Vehicle = to park. Chinese is extremely logical and consistent. This is a set of building blocks that has evolved over 5,000 years in a relatively linear progression. Critical Fahrenheit? The same can not be said about the English language. Just think of the English words for the Chinese equivalences above:

Train, windmill, millwheel/waterwheel, tram/trolley, car/automobile, horse and cart/trap and pony. Unlike Chinese where these concepts are all linked by ? there’s very little consistency in our vehicle/wheel related vocabulary, and gcse photosynthesis, no way to link these sets of thesis, related concepts via the gcse coursework word itself. English is a diverse and rich language, but that comes with its drawbacks – a case-by-case spelling system that drives learners mad. Chinese, on the other hand, is precise and logical, once you get over were the initial “alienness”. This logical way of constructing vocabulary is not limited to everyday words like “car” and “train”. Gcse Photosynthesis? It extends throughout the page language. To take an extreme example let’s look at Jurassic Park. The other day I watched Jurassic Park with my Chinese girlfriend. (OK, re -watched. It’s a classic!)

Part of the fun for me (annoyance for her) was asking her the Chinese for gcse coursework, various dinosaur species. Take a second to look through these examples. For Doctoral Dissertations? You’ll love the gcse photosynthesis simplicity! T Rex ?? = tyrant + dragon Tricerotops ???? three + horn + dinosaur Diplodocus ?? roof-beam + dragon Velociraptor ??? clever + thief + dragon (or swift stealer dragon) Stegosaurus ?? (double-edged) sword + dragon Dilophosaurus ??? double+spined+dragon. Don’t try to memorise these characters, just appreciate the underlying logic of how the complex concepts are constructed . (Unless, of essay, course, you are a palaeontologist…or as the Chinese would say a Ancient + Life + Animal + Scientist!). I couldn’t spell half of these dinosaur names in English for this article, but once I knew how the coursework photosynthesis Chinese word was constructed, typing in essay 451 the right characters was simple. Once you know a handful of characters, you can start to put together complete words, and knowing how to write in Chinese suddenly becomes a lot easier. In a lot of cases you can take educated guesses at concepts and get them right by combining known characters into unknown words. For more on this, check my series of gcse coursework, Chinese character images that I publish on college essay this page. They focus on Chinese words constructed from coursework photosynthesis, common characters, and help you understand more of the “building block” logic of Chinese. TAKEAWAY : Chinese words are constructed extremely logically from the underlying characters.

This means that once a handful of characters have been. learned vocabulary acquisition speeds up exponentially. How to Learn Written Chinese Fast. Before diving into learning characters, make sure you have a decent grounding in essay fahrenheit 451 Chinese pronunciation via the pinyin system. The reason for this is that taking on pronunciation, tones and characters from day one is really tough. Don’t get me wrong, you can do it. Especially if you’re highly motivated. But for most people there’s a better way. Learn a bit of spoken Chinese first. With some spoken Chinese under your belt, and an understanding of pronunciation and tones, starting to coursework photosynthesis learn how to education essay write in Chinese will seem a whole lot easier.

When you’re ready, here’s how to use all the information from this article and deal with written Chinese in a sensible way. I’ve got a systematic approach to written Chinese which you can find in detail on Sensible Chinese. Right now, I’m going to get you started with the coursework photosynthesis basics. The four stages for manufacturing company plan, learning Chinese characters are: Sounds technical huh? Don’t worry, it’s not really. This part of the process is about choosing what you put into your character learning system. If you are working on the wrong material then it’s wasted effort. Instead choose to learn Chinese characters that you are like to want to use in gcse coursework the future. My list in order of priority contains: characters/words I’ve encountered through daily life. Technical Education Outline? characters/words I’ve learnt from textbooks characters/words I’ve found in frequency lists of the most common characters and words.

This is the “learning” part of the system. You take a new word or character and break it down into its component parts. These components can then be used to create memory aids. Hanzicraft.com or Pleco’s built-in character decomposition tool are fantastic for breaking down new characters. Coursework Photosynthesis? These will be helpful until you learn to recognize the character components by sight. These tools will also show you if there are sound-meaning component clues in the character. Use the individual components of a character to build a “story” around the character.

Personal, sexy and violent stories tend to narrative essay examples stick in coursework the mind best! #128578; I also like to add colours into dissertations, my stories to gcse coursework photosynthesis represent the tones (1st tone Green, 2nd tone Blue etc.) After the “input” and the “process”… it’s time to review it all! The simplest review system is paper-based flashcards which you periodically use to refresh your memory. A more efficient method can be found in thesis blog software or apps that use a Spaced Repetition System, like Anki or Pleco. An important point: Review is not learning . It’s tempting to rely on software like Anki to drill in the vocabulary through brute-force repetition.

But don’t skip the gcse first two parts – processing the character and apa citation dissertations, creating a mnemonic are key parts of the process. It isn’t enough to just learn and review your words… you also need to put them into use ! Thankfully, technology has made this easier than ever. Finding a language exchange partner or a cost-effective teacher is super simple nowadays, so there’s no excuse for not putting your new vocabulary into action! The resources I personally use are: Importantly, whilst you are using your current vocabulary in these forms of communication, you’ll be picking up new content all the time, which you can add back into your system. The four steps above are a cycle that you will continue to rotate through – all the corrections and new words you receive during usage should become material to add to the system.

To recap, the four steps of biology, systematically learning Chinese characters are: By building these steps into your regular study schedule you can steadily work through the thousands of Chinese characters and words you’ll need to achieve literacy. This is a long-haul process! So having a basic system in blog place is biology photosynthesis very important for apa citation, consistency. Some languages can seem very overwhelming so breaking them down like that makes them seem easier to tackle. Great to hear! Please to hear it all made sense! #128578; Definitely – the gcse photosynthesis main issue with Chinese is critical fahrenheit that is is REALLY hard to know where to start. There are so many balls in the air from day 1. Knowing what the various pieces are (even if you don’t know them yet) is a big advantage and helps to get over the “hump” that makes people quit learning Chinese. Absolutely!

Also, just knowing that there’s a limited number of the various pieces is helpful in itself – rather than just learning and not seeing the biology gcse coursework photosynthesis end anywhere near #128578; ?? is more like “violent” + “dragon” I think. This was great! I’ve never tried to to learn Chinese but it makes it seem much more simple. Essay? Any way you could do a breakdown of other languages like this? Such as Arabic, Turkish, or Russian? (I ask those out of personal interest/bias, in case you are open to coursework photosynthesis requests #128578; ) Hi Arielle… haha, thanks for asking! Every time I write one of these articles I get a request for doing the same thing in another language #128578; I suppose I should do Arabic next, since I’m learning at for doctoral dissertations the moment! It’s actually quite easy #128578; Does it seem, in your experience, that it’s possible to deconstruct ANY language in this or some sort of way that makes it easier to learn/process? That would definitely be encouraging! Absolutely!

There are always patterns which make things quicker for gcse coursework, you to learn. Love this article! It’s full of information I wish I had known when I started learning how to write the Chinese characters used in Japanese. Learning the 214 basic components really helps learning new characters and their pronunciation, but when I first studied the list, I was puzzled to see that some basic components were actually not basic at all, some of them containing other basic components, while some strokes I was repeatedly seeing in different characters were not considered basic components. I decided to forget about the basic components list for a while and follow the intuitive division my brain was making, and I think this helped me recognise and write the sipliest characters more easily and faster.

To give an how warlike the sioux, example with characters that you use, when I saw ?, I would actually divide it in three parts: 1 The top part, which can not be written with a computer (or at photosynthesis least mine) and critical essay 451, is the top part of this Japanese character too: ?. 2 ?, which is already a basic component. 3 ? , which is a basic component too. And I wouldn’t try to relate ? directly to ?. What do you think about this approach for someone who is gcse coursework studying Chinese characters for the very first time? Of course, I later returned to the list once more and, as I say, it’s been really useful. Hi Jorge, great question.

I helped Olly with this article and run sensiblechinese.com. Thought I’d jump in to answer. The list of 214 is definitely a weird one. It’s an “official” list from a dictionary in 1716 and there are some definite changes/improvements that could be made. Not to manufacturing company plan mention the fact that this was a couple hundred years before the advent of gcse, Simplified script! I’d say for thesis blog, beginners it is a good idea to get a basic understanding of around 100 radicals and not fret too much about which are radicals/components/characters. Biology Coursework? Some components are strokes, some are made of other components and technical education, others are indeed characters!

There’s a whole mess of logic in here and at the end of the day it’s not terribly important. Biology Gcse Coursework Photosynthesis? The components are great as building blocks to build characters, which in turn build words which can be used to communicate and actually USE Chinese. The radicals are therefore a crucial step but not actually that important in narrative essay examples and of themselves. Biology Coursework Photosynthesis? For beginners I’d say: get a basic idea of the college essay composition, meaning and pronunciation of the basic 100 or so radicals (using the excellent Memrise course or the Skritter 100 radicals list) and be generally aware of the fact that characters are made of coursework photosynthesis, components. After that focus study on characters and words (the actual units of essay 451, communication in gcse photosynthesis Chinese). This study will be much improved by understanding the basic underlying structure of Chinese characters rather via the narrative essay examples components. There are weird components like ?. Biology Photosynthesis? This one in particular is in Japanese katakana (see the crazy fascinating chart of the origins of hiragana/katana on Tofugu’s blog here: http://www.tofugu.com/2012/08/30/shotoku-taishi/) With these kind of “weird” components there two possibilities as far as I can see. First is to company plan actually go back and find out the actual origin and etymology of the component.

There are countless Chinese books about this, great big tomes of character history and culture. Outlier Linguistics are doing an exciting project to bring this stuff into more common study use. This is the way to go if you really want to know why such and such is such a way and to base everything in historical context. The second alternative is to use whatever works. In the case of biology, ?which you mention above.

I’ve seen this referred to as a shortened version of ? and also as a squeezed version of business, ?/? in Hoenig’s character book. I’m sure there are many other different interpretations. I check ???? and biology, the answer seems to be it is manufacturing company business a version of ? (single edged sword – http://dict.baidu.com/s?wd=%E5%88%82) but honestly it doesn’t really matter if you subscribe to the “whatever works” school. When we use ? in our mnemonics its best meaning is the one we remember best! For example whenever I see the top “piece” of gcse coursework, a character like ? or ? I think of it as a “spikey hat” or “Sonic the hedgehog”. It isn’t (probably!) but for mnemonic purposes this doesn’t really matter as long as I can learn the were essay meaning/pronunciation of ?/?. These are two different ways to approach the components – either root everything in its “proper” form or take a more devil-may-care attitude and use whatever works.

Both work and the choice depends on what type of learning you are. The first, “proper”, approach is about to biology photosynthesis get a HUGE boost with the essay release of the Outlier Linguistic dictionary add-on for Pleco. Gcse? Until then I’d personally recommend beginners stick with the dissertations pragmatic, whatever-helps-you-remember-those-squiggly-lines approach. In practice this means not worrying too much about the exact meaning or formation of biology gcse, components and characters but instead worrying enough to LEARN and USE the apa citation dissertations characters and words to communicate. I agree with you totally that it’s best to use the method that works best for biology gcse, you. College Narrative Essay Examples? If learning radicals in isolation is too “slippery then it’s definitely best to learn in the context of characters. Phew – sorry for coursework photosynthesis, adding a sizable addendum to technical outline the post! :p. Hey, Kyle. Gcse Photosynthesis? Thank you so much for taking the college narrative examples time to reply. Biology Coursework Photosynthesis? I appreciate your long explanation; it’s full of great information, again!

Thank YOU for asking such good questions! I’m glad the information is still useful for learning the narrative essay Kanji. This article plus the biology other one on Japanese writing on for doctoral this site should be a good combo! It would be interesting to explore moving from Chinese hanzi to Japanese kanji or vice versa. That would be a fascinating article. I could potentially do the Chinese to Japanese but not the coursework Japanese to Chinese – it would need to be a two-person job for essay, sure!

I might copy and gcse coursework, paste that reply into a new blog post! #128578; This article is brilliant !!…in one stroke it has “cured” many of the problems I encountered many years ago when I began to study mandarin Chinese..why couldn’t my teacher have explained these points as succinctly !! ha ha ha….Thank you again for a cool article ! Most Chinese teachers won’t actually think in this way because they learned the language in a far more “organic” immersion based approach (ie. growing up in a Chinese household!). Children have enough study time (decades) to gradually add up all the how warlike essay information they need into a coherent structure. As adults we don’t have that time BUT we thankfully have the ability to biology gcse understand more complicated frameworks, especially when we can compare them to education essay existing frameworks (ie. our mother tongue). Knowing the basic outline and framework of Chinese characters is a neat little shortcut we can take as adults. The purpose of gcse photosynthesis, this article was for me and Olly to fahrenheit give you guys this overall framework into coursework, which all your learning (new components, characters, words) can be slotted. This kind of treatment is possible because I’ve learned Chinese as an were essay, outsider (although technically my grandfather’s grandfather was from Guandong – don’t think that counts though!). This outside perspective gives a little more critical distance and helps explain to other non-Chinese-child learners the best ways to approach the language. I’m working on a full video course based on these ideas which should be ready in the next 2 months.

Best way to get updated is to sign up for the mailing list at sensiblechinese.com. The more people waiting for that the biology photosynthesis more I need to get the course finished! #128512; Nice article! I appreciate the tips. Do you have any suggested resources for learning traditional characters? I am also learning Cantonese, not Mandarin, which has its own fun bits. Technical Education Essay Outline? Olly, I know you learned speaking before but not writing, correct? It would be wonderful if you could have someone guest post who learned writing (in Canto) as well! I’ve been studying speaking for a few years and have recently began reading (mainly the Canto-specific characters, since my first priority is text messaging and fb). It would be great to get some advice from someone else who has gone before!

Hi. I think the advice for biology, traditional characters is plan basically the same. You identify the biology gcse coursework components and learn them as efficiently as possible. Clearly, it’s a bigger challenge than learning simplified characters, but the process itself would remain the same. I’ll ask Kyle to chip in technical essay with this! As Olly says the components are basically the same in both character sets.

There are a few weird ones like ?/?(first version is biology coursework photosynthesis traditional, second in simplified) but on the whole the apa citation dissertations components are the photosynthesis same. There are still around. 200 components, the manufacturing same 200 in both traditional and photosynthesis, simplified. The main difference is that traditional characters often use more components than simplified .The process of simplification was, for manufacturing company, the most part, to remove or replace components. Because the same component - character - word structure is in place in biology gcse both Cantonese and Mandarin the learning tips above are still relevant.

One thing I’m not certain of is whether Cantonese follows the sound-meaning (phono-semantic) rules I talk about above. On first inspection I think it might. I looked up ? in company plan Cantonese (dou3) and biology gcse photosynthesis, found that the component ? on blog page the right hand side is dou1. So it looks like sound-meaning rules apply to Cantonese too, which is great news. However, as you mention, there are Cantonese-specific characters. I don’t speak/read Cantonese so pardon my ignorance here but I think one is ? (first character of m’goi). Biology Gcse Coursework? That character does exist in narrative essay examples Mandarin but it is MUCH less frequently used in Mandarin than in Cantonese.

Adjusting the techniques above to these different characters wouldn’t be a problem though as they are still composed of the same components. Gcse Photosynthesis? In the case of the character ? the narrative essay examples components ? + ? + ?. Same building blocks, different constructions. The fundamentals remain the same. Also, I think that there are not too many of these Cantonese specific characters. I just checked if I can read a Cantonese newspaper and had no problems- the written language is basically the same. There were a handful of different characters but nothing insurmountable. I would also guess a lot of the Cantonese specific characters are also most-frequently used (like ??). Languages tends to coursework photosynthesis localize most at the common, everyday usage level. The good thing about this is that you’ll get a tonne of exposure via texting and FB. So I think 90%+ of the above is relevant to Cantonese.

The structure of the written language is the same using Traditional or Simplified, even extending into Traditional Cantonese. There will be some tweaks, mainly in were the sioux essay terms of photosynthesis, WHAT you learn but I think HOW you go about learning the characters is fundamentally the same. I’d also like to hear from a Cantonese reader/writer to confirm this though! Ha! Disregard my comment about the critical essay newspaper. According to this post (https://guidetocantonese.wordpress.com/start/the-writing-system/) newspapers are written in photosynthesis standard written Chinese, following Mandarin grammar. Supposedly tabloids/magazines use written Cantonese so I’ll have a look at how warlike the sioux essay those! That blog post has some useful information (see the last few paragraphs). It talks about how standard written Mandarin was “overlaid” onto gcse, Cantonese, which was traditionally a spoken language only.

Again though, same components, same characters (for the most part), just adapted to fit with spoken Cantonese. I’m a native Cantonese speaker, and fluent in Mandarin. I know both Traditional and Simplified Chinese. And yes, Kyle was right that Traditional Chinese is just have more components than the Simplified one. And I think the above principles can apply to both Mandarin and Cantonese. However, I won’t count for the Cantonese specific characters. We don’t learn these kind of characters at school, and they are not any official characters anyway.

It’s common to have new characters or new vocabs in any languages in the world. Essay Outline? So do the Cantonese specific characters. But we don’t really write with these characters in biology gcse coursework any formal way, you will see it in the social media, some of the local newspapers and magazines, the subtitles of how warlike essay, movies. If you interested to know more about the relationship Chinese: The Relationship Between Spoken and gcse photosynthesis, Written Form, I’ve written a post in apa citation for doctoral my blog here: http://www.fortunecookiemom.com/2017/02/chinese-relationship-between-spoken-written-form/ I also create Chinese printables and fun educational resources for the little kids.

Come check it out my blog at: http://www.fortunecookiemom.com/ How to download it’s PDF,can you please kindly forward this PDF to my mail ”[emailprotected]” If you enter your email into the box above, you will get the PDF! As I have already registered my mobile account, it only says ‘you have already registered ‘and I didn’t get PDF,can you please send me PDF directly in my mail. Nice review. I have some comments to add. There is a brilliant app for beginners to learn writing and reading Simplified Chinese characters. I have been using it for about 2 months. You can search for it in google, just type: “Kung-Fu Master Easiest Way”. The Advantage of the Chinese Character Decomposition.

The Chinese character decomposition is gcse a new method of successful Chinese language studying. The basic concept of this method is manufacturing plan decomposition (it also may be known as break-down, split or analysis) of the gcse Chinese characters. It helps the learner to college narrative essay examples analyze and memorize the Chinese characters quickly. This approach to the Chinese language studying makes the whole process of learning easy and biology coursework photosynthesis, pleasant. All textbooks by Polina Shinkina are written based on technical outline the method of the Chinese character decomposition. Have a look how decomposition of the Chinese character ? zao ‘morning’ is simple: ? jiong down box. The Chinese Character Decomposition Guidance by Polina Shinkina. This is biology great! My nine-year-old has asked to learn Chinese and it may even be do-able for us after this. Thanks for posting!

It certainly is, and I’m so impressed your nine-year-old is asking to learn Chinese… a bright future ahead! Thanks a lot!! #128512; this helped me to make a great start. I have a question. At the start when you started to explain the meaning and sound components. Do i put the sound components always at the end of a word?? Your article was very good….it didn’t scare me…! My goal is to spend many years learning Chinese. This is a good starting place.

If “??“ is a word, then so is college examples “??” and “??“? Since these clearly aren’t words (unless we stretch the concept of biology gcse coursework photosynthesis, “word” to meaninglessness), by denying the consequent, “??” is also not a word. More logic: just because most Chinese words are composed of 2 characters doesn’t mean that all instances of 2 characters comprise a word. “??“ is a subject predicate phrase (????). Another way to make this clear through logic would be to ask, if ”??“ is education outline a word, then what part of speech is it? The article is coursework great, but I still don’t know where to critical fahrenheit start. To start just listening to things or write components with and characters and what books to use?

No idea. I started by gcse photosynthesis, simple curiosity about the essay science behind Chinese language – but your article seems to have hooked me for learning at least the basic Chinese! Good luck to me #128521;

Tips for Academic Writing and Other Formal Writing. It is a long list. People have a lot of problems. Some of the biology photosynthesis items sound picky or trivial, even to critical, me. Yet bad grammar, bad style, and gcse coursework, poor organization will make it very difficult for you to convey your ideas clearly and professionally, and will limit your academic and professional success. I strongly recommend that you work to critical essay, eliminate any of gcse photosynthesis these problems that may apply to your own writing. -- Dr. Blog Page! James A. Bednar. Rules for formal writing are quite strict, though often unstated.

Formal writing is used in academic and scientific settings whenever you want to coursework photosynthesis, convey your ideas to a wide audience, with many possible backgrounds and assumptions. Unlike casual conversation or emails to friends, formal writing needs to be clear, unambiguous, literal, and well structured. Formal writing is not just dictated conversation In general, it is inappropriate simply to write as you would speak. In conversation, the listener can ask for how warlike clarification or elaboration easily, and thus the speaker can use imprecise language, ramble from topic to topic freely, and so on. Formal writing must instead stand on its own, conveying the author's thesis clearly through words alone. As a result, formal writing requires substantial effort to biology gcse, construct meaningful sentences, paragraphs, and arguments relevant to for doctoral dissertations, a well-defined thesis. Biology Gcse Coursework Photosynthesis! The best formal writing will be difficult to write but very easy to manufacturing, read. Biology Coursework Photosynthesis! The author's time and effort spent on writing will be repaid with the time and effort saved by the (many) readers. Make your thesis obvious throughout An essay, article, or report should have one main topic (the thesis) that is clearly evident in how warlike the introduction and conclusion.

Of course, the thesis may itself be a conjunction or a contrast between two items, but it must still be expressible as a single, coherent point. Gcse! In a short essay, the essay main point should usually conclude the introductory paragraph. Gcse Coursework Photosynthesis! In a longer essay, the main point generally concludes the introductory section. The reader should never be in any doubt about what your thesis is; whenever you think it might not be absolutely obvious, remind the reader again. When in doubt, use the recipe: introduce, expand/justify, conclude Paragraphs, subsections, sections, chapters, and books all use the same structure: first make the topic clear, then expand upon it, and finally sum up, tying everything back to the topic. At each level, you need to tell the education reader what you will be trying to say (in this paragraph, section, etc.), then you need to cover all the relevant material, clearly relating it to your stated point, and finally you need to gcse, tie the subtopics together so that they do indeed add up to company, establish the biology gcse photosynthesis point that you promised. Stay on topic Everything in your document should be related clearly to college narrative examples, your main thesis. You can write other papers later for anything else you might want to say. The reason your reader is reading this particular paper of yours is that he or she wants to know about your main topic, not simply about everything you might want to say (unless for some narcissistic reason everything you might want to say is your clearly stated main topic). Conversely, there is gcse no need to bring up items simply because they relate to your main topic, if you do not have anything to say about them.

If you do bring something up, say something important about it! Staying on topic does not mean being one sided To avoid being misleading, you will often need to essay fahrenheit, acknowledge some weaknesses in your argument or discuss some merits of an photosynthesis opposing argument. It is fahrenheit quite appropriate to discuss such opposing views when they are relevant, i.e., when they relate directly to the main topic of your paper. For instance, if you are reviewing a paper and coursework photosynthesis, arguing that it was not written well overall, it is usually a good idea to fahrenheit 451, point out the few things that were done well, e.g. Biology Coursework Photosynthesis! so that the reader does not get the impression that you just like to complain :-) . Often such opposing observations fit well just after the introduction, providing a background for apa citation the rest of your arguments that follow. Whenever you do include such material, i.e. Biology Gcse! things that go in were the sioux essay the direction opposite to your main thesis, be careful to put it into only a few well-defined places, reorganizing your argument to achieve that when necessary. Jumping back and gcse coursework, forth will confuse the reader unnecessarily. Fahrenheit! In every case, try to make your point as clearly as possible, while at the same time not overstating it and biology photosynthesis, not pretending that no other valid viewpoints exist.

Transitions are difficult but very important Each sentence in your document should follow smoothly from the preceding sentence, and each paragraph should follow smoothly from the technical education essay preceding paragraph. The world is arguably an unstructured jumble of ideas, but anything that you expect the reader to read from gcse coursework photosynthesis start to how warlike were essay, finish needs to be a linear progression along one single path. Transition words and phrases are what make it possible for a reader to follow you easily as you explore the various ideas in your paper. Without good transitions, the reader will end up backtracking repeatedly, which will often cause your point to be lost or your paper to be tossed aside altogether. One clue that your writing needs better transitions is if you find that you can cut and paste paragraphs from one section to another without doing substantial rewriting of how the paragraph begins and ends. Gcse Coursework! If making such rearrangements is thesis easy, then you have not been linking your paragraphs into a coherent narrative that reads well from start to finish. In practice, making smooth transitions is very difficult. Learning to do it takes a lot of practice at biology, first, and blog page, actually making the biology photosynthesis transitions smooth takes a lot of effort every time you write or revise something. One rule of thumb is that whenever you switch topics, you should try to provide a verbal clue that you are doing so, using transitions like However, . , As a result, . , For comparison, , etc. If you notice that you have to critical essay fahrenheit 451, add these words between most of your sentences, not just the biology gcse coursework photosynthesis paragraphs, then you are bouncing around too much.

In that case you need to reorganize your document to group related thoughts together, switching topics only page, when necessary. Once the organization is good, all you can do is biology gcse coursework photosynthesis read and essay, reread what you write, rewording it until each new item follows easily from those before it. Write what you mean, mean what you write Speakers use many informal, colloquial phrases in biology casual conversation, usually intending to convey meanings other than what the words literally indicate. For instance, we often speak informally of going the extra mile, at the end of the day, hard facts, things being crystal clear or pretty convincing, someone sticking to a topic, readers being turned off, something really being the thesis blog case, etc. Avoid such imprecise writing in formal prose -- whenever possible, the biology photosynthesis words you write should literally mean exactly what they say. If there were no miles involved, do not write of extra ones; if there was no crystal, do not write about its clarity.

Among other benefits, avoiding such informal language will ensure that your meaning is obvious even to those who have not learned the currently popular idioms, such as those for how warlike were the sioux whom English is a second language and those who might read your writing years from gcse now or in another part of the world. Formal writing should be clear to as many people as possible, and its meaning should not depend on the whims of your local dialect of English. Apa Citation! It is a permanent and public record of your ideas, and should mean precisely what you have written. Avoid redundancy Unfortunately, specifying minimum page requirements encourages redundancy, but please try to avoid that temptation. When two words will do, there is no need to use twenty. Whenever you finish a sentence or paragraph, read over it to see if any words or sentences can be eliminated -- often your point will get much stronger when you do so. In the academic community, your ability to write concisely is far more important than your ability to fill up a page with text. Academic courses specify page minimums to ensure that you write an essay of the appropriate depth, not to test whether you can say the same thing a dozen different ways just to fill up space. In the real world, you will see many more page maximum specifications than page minimums.

Be professional and diplomatic When writing about another's work, always write as if your subject may read your document. Biology Coursework Photosynthesis! Your essays for a course assignment will probably not be published, but genuine scientific writing will be, and the subject of your paper may very well come across your work eventually. Thus it is crucial to avoid pejorative, insulting, and offensive terms like attempt to, a waste of apa citation dissertations time, pointless, etc. If some of the essays I have seen were read out loud to the author under discussion, a fistfight would probably result. At the very least, you would have made an enemy for life, which is rarely a good idea. In any case, your points will be much more convincing if you can disagree professionally and diplomatically, without attacking the author or implying that he or she is an imbecile. And, finally, no one will publish your work if it is just a diatribe and biology photosynthesis, not a sober, reasoned argument. To avoid these sorts of problems, it might be good to pretend that you are the author under discussion and re-read your essay through his or her eyes. It should be straightforward to figure out which parts would make you defensive or angry, and you can then reword those. Avoid imperative voice Use imperative voice sparingly in a scientific paper, because it comes across as rude (as do many of the technical essay outline sentences in what you are reading right now!).

E.g. do not say Recall that . . Of course, an biology occasional imperative in parentheses is thesis blog not objectionable (e.g. (see Walker 1996 for more details).). A formal document needs to be structured at all levels, whether or not the structure is made explicit using section labels or other visible clues. Overall structure The standard format for an effective essay or article is to: (1) present a coherent thesis in the introduction, (2) try your hardest to convince the reader of biology your thesis in the body of the paper, and (3) restate the thesis in the conclusion so that the reader remains quite sure what your thesis is, and so that the college narrative essay reader can decide whether he or she was convinced. Using any other format for a formal article is almost invariably a bad idea. The introduction and conclusions do not always need to be labeled as such, but they need to be there. Note that an abstract is no substitute for biology coursework an introduction; abstracts act as an independent miniature version of the article, not part of the introduction. Each paragraph is blog page one relevant sub-topic Each paragraph in a document should have one topic that is clearly evident early in biology the paragraph. Were Essay! Every paragraph should have a clear relationship to biology gcse, the main topic of your document; if not, either the paragraph should be eliminated, or the main topic should be revised. Use complete sentences Except in extraordinary circumstances, sentences in the main text must be complete, i.e., they must have a subject and apa citation for doctoral, a verb, so that they express an entire thought, not just a fragment or the beginning of a thought. Note that most -ing words are not verbs.

The light turning green is just a fragment, i.e., a start to a sentence or a part of one. To be a sentence that you could use on biology coursework photosynthesis its own followed by a period, it would have to be The light turned green, which has both a subject and a verb. Put appropriate punctuation between sentences. Two complete sentences can be divided with a period, question mark, or exclamation point, or they can be weakly connected as clauses with a semicolon. However, they can never be connected with a comma in formal writing! To see if your writing has this problem, consider each of your commas in turn. If you could replace the comma with a period, leaving two complete, meaningful sentences, then that comma is an error -- a comma can never be used like that! Instead, replace the comma with a semicolon, in case you have two sentences that need to be linked in some generic way, or make the linkage explicit with a conjunction, or simply use a period, to leave two complete and manufacturing plan, independent sentences.

Section titles Section titles for biology photosynthesis an article should say exactly and succinctly what the reader will get out of that section. For Doctoral! In most relatively short documents, using a standard set of section titles is best so that people can scan through your document quickly. Section standards vary in different fields, but a common set is: Introduction, Background, Methods (for an experimental paper) or Architecture (for a modeling paper), Discussion, Future Work (often merged with Discussion), and biology photosynthesis, Conclusion. If you do not use the standard titles, e.g. if you have labeled lower-level subsections, you should be quite explicit about what is in that section. Such labels should make sense to college narrative essay, someone who has not yet read that section, and make it clear why they should read it. For instance, a section about adding a second eye to a simulation of single-eye vision could truthfully be called Multiple eyes, but that title is meaningless to someone scanning the photosynthesis document. Instead, it should be something like Extending the model to explain stereo vision whose meaning will be clear to the type of person likely to be reading the paper. Everything important goes in college examples your introduction and conclusion Everyone who looks at your paper will at least skim the introduction and conclusion, and biology gcse, those who read it in essay depth will remember those two sections the gcse coursework best. So make sure that your most important points are quite prominent and company, unmissable in biology gcse coursework photosynthesis those sections. Say it, never just say that you will say it In the introduction, conclusion, and abstract (if any), do not merely describe what you are going to fahrenheit, say or have said; actually say it! For instance, do not just state that I will discuss and coursework, evaluate this paper if you will later argue that (for example) it is blog page not convincing.

Instead state that the paper is unconvincing, and gcse photosynthesis, (in brief) why you believe that to be the case. Then you can elaborate on that point in subsequent paragraphs. Subsections If you have sections 1, 1.1, and 1.2, there must be introductory material between 1 and college narrative essay, 1.1 that explains briefly what is in biology the subsections, mentioned in thesis page the order of the biology photosynthesis subsections. That is, 1.1 should never follow just after 1 without some intervening text. If you have 1.1, there must always be a 1.2; otherwise 1 and 1.1 should be merged. Each 1.x subsection should end with a concluding statement of what has been established in technical essay that subsection, wrapping things up before moving on coursework to the next subsection. Figure captions Different communities have different expectations on college narrative essay what to put into figure captions. Some journals, like Science , have very long captions, which are meant to be readable independently of the main article.

That way, readers can skim articles and only look at interesting figures, before deciding whether to read the whole article. In such cases, you must ensure that all of the biology coursework main points of the manufacturing company plan figure are also mentioned in biology coursework photosynthesis the text of the article, so that someone reading the article straight through will not miss them. Other journals and other publications like books, theses, and proposals tend to have very little in the caption, with the figures being understandable only when reading the 451 main text. Gcse Coursework Photosynthesis! Even in such cases, I myself prefer to put all the graphical details like the essay fahrenheit 451 dotted line represents in the caption, plus enough context so that the import of the figure is clear. Biology! You are welcome to have your own preferences, but you should be aware of what you are trying to achieve, i.e. whether you want the narrative caption to biology gcse photosynthesis, be readable on apa citation dissertations its own. Try hard to avoid ambiguous references Conversation is replete with ambiguous words like this, these, his, it, they, etc. Biology Gcse Photosynthesis! These words have no meaning in themselves, but in essay conversation the meaning is coursework photosynthesis usually clear from the context. In written text, however, the intended meaning is college essay quite often not evident to the reader, because there are e.g. many possible interpretations of it and this. It is a good idea to read over anything you write, searching for this sort of biology gcse coursework photosynthesis word. For each instance, first ask yourself To what specific item does this term refer?. Company Business Plan! For such a reference to make sense, the object, person, or concept must have been explicitly mentioned just prior to your reference.

Often you will find that it or they refers to something vague that was not even discussed explicitly in your paper, in coursework photosynthesis which case you should reword your text entirely. Even if the for doctoral dissertations item to biology, which you refer is explicitly mentioned in your paper, ask yourself whether there is any chance that the reader might not know to which of several items you might be referring. Critical Essay Fahrenheit! E.g. for the word he, were there two or three people being discussed? If so then state the actual name of each; he would be ambiguous. Often an ambiguous this or these can be disambiguated by adding a noun that specifies precisely the type of object or concept to which you are referring. For instance, this argument or this paper is less confusing than simply this. That is, do not use this followed directly by gcse coursework photosynthesis a verb phrase, but you can use this before a noun phrase, as in education this sentence is biology gcse coursework a good example of the use of the word 'this'.

Watch out for homonyms Spell checkers are wonderful, but they are absolutely useless for detecting misused homonyms or near-homonyms, i.e., actual words whose meaning is confused with other actual words. As a result, homonyms are probably the most common spelling errors in for doctoral word-processed text. Even if you are lazy and let the spell checker fix all of your other words, make certain that you know the differences between words like: If you do not know the difference, you must simply avoid using any of these words. Gcse Coursework! Yet because the spell checker takes care of all the other words you may misspell, learning to use these few words correctly is surely not much of a burden, and is crucial for convincing your readers that you are competent and trustworthy. Avoid comprise Apparently the word comprise has now been used incorrectly so many times to the sioux essay, mean compose that this usage is now becoming acceptable. But it is much safer simply to avoid comprise altogether, as anyone who does know what it started out meaning will be annoyed when you use it to mean compose. But and however are not interchangeable The words but and however have similar meanings, but they are not interchangeable.

If you take a grammatically correct sentence containing but and replace it with however, or vice versa, the gcse result will almost always be incorrect, mainly because of comma punctuation. I like oranges, but I do not like tangerines. I like oranges. However, I do not like tangerines. I like oranges; however, I do not like tangerines. I, however, do not like grapefruits.

I like oranges however they have been prepared. If you exchange any of these buts and howevers, then the apa citation dissertations sentences would become incorrect, and in some cases meaningless. A point is a single item The word point can only be used for a single, atomic item. Thus it is not appropriate to gcse, discuss a sub-point, part of apa citation dissertations a point, the first half of a point, etc. Instead use topic or section, etc. A research There is no noun phrase a research in gcse coursework English. Use a study or just research, never a research. Similarly, there is no separate plural form of research; researches is an English verb, not a noun. Avoid capitalization When in apa citation for doctoral doubt, use lower case. Capitalization is appropriate only for biology specific, named, individual items or people.

For example, capitalize school subjects only when you are referring to a specific course at a specific school: math is essay examples a general subject, but Math 301 is a particular course. Similarly: Department of Computer Sciences vs. a computer science department, the president vs. President Bush. When in doubt, use lower case. Avoid contractions Contractions are appropriate only for conversational use and for gcse informal writing, never for essay technical or formal writing. Hyphenate phrases only when otherwise ambiguous In English phrases (groups of gcse several words forming a unit), hyphens are used to group pairs of words when the meaning might otherwise be ambiguous. That is, they act like the narrative essay parentheses in a mathematical expression. Biology! They should normally otherwise be avoided unless they are part of a single word (or the dictionary explicitly requires them), i.e., it is 451 a mistake to use a hyphen where the meaning was already clear and unambiguous.

For instance, long adjective phrases preceding a noun sometimes include another noun temporarily being used as an gcse photosynthesis adjective. Such phrases can often be parsed several different ways with different meanings. For example, the technical education outline phrase English language learners as written means language learners from England, because, by default, language modifies learners, and English modifies language learners. Biology Coursework! But the manufacturing company plan phrase that was intended was probably English-language learners, i.e. Biology Gcse! learners of the English language, and manufacturing company plan, using the hyphen helps make that grouping clear. Note that there would never be a hyphen if the same phrase were used after the noun it modifies, because in that case there would be absolutely no chance of ambiguity: a learner of the English language ( NEVER a learner of the English-language; the hyphen effectively turns the noun phrase English language into an adjective, and a prepositional phrase starting with of the must be completed with a noun, not an adjective). Note that hyphens are used only in adjective phrases; they are not needed after an adverb (and are therefore incorrect). An adverb explicitly modifies the coursework photosynthesis adjective immediately following it, never a noun. Critical Essay 451! For instance, a quickly dropping stock cannot possibly be mistaken for photosynthesis a quickly dropping-stock, because adverbs like quickly cannot modify a noun phrase like dropping stock, and so quickly clearly must modify dropping. In general, there should never be a hyphen after an adverb ending in ly, though hyphens are sometimes necessary after some non-adverbial ly words like early (as in the correct examples an early-rising rooster or an early-rising English-language learner). Company Business! You may want to search through your finished document for ly-; nearly all examples of gcse photosynthesis those three characters in a row will be mistakes. In some very complicated phrases, two levels of thesis blog grouping can be achieved using an en dash, i.e. a slightly longer dash than a hyphen.

For instance, a language-learning--associated problem would be a problem associated with language learning; the hyphen groups language and learning, while the en-dash -- connects language learning with associated. Without hyphens or without the en-dash, the gcse coursework phrase would be quite difficult to read. But in such cases it is often clearer just to the sioux essay, reword the sentence to avoid the ambiguity, as in a problem associated with language learning. In cases where the word grouping is quite obvious because the pair of words are so often used together, the biology photosynthesis hyphen can be omitted even when it would strictly be required to avoid ambiguity. For instance chocolate chip cookies is technical education outline unlikely to be misread as chocolate chip-cookies, despite that being the literal interpretation, and biology gcse coursework photosynthesis, so the hyphen can usually be omitted from chocolate-chip cookies. In general, you should hyphenate a phrase when that particular sentence would otherwise be ambiguous. Narrative! In any other case, even a nearby sentence containing the same phrase but e.g. Biology Photosynthesis! after the apa citation dissertations noun it modifies, you should leave out the hyphen. I.e., the hyphen is not a property of the phrase, but of how you are using the phrase in the sentence. American vs.

British English I myself am American by birth, despite lecturing in a British university, and I use American spellings by default (e.g. organization, not organisation). Biology Gcse! Authors are generally free to use whichever spelling they prefer, although publishers will often change the spellings to make e.g. all the papers in a certain edited volume use the blog page same conventions. Thus please do not hesitate to use whichever one of the biology (correct) spellings you are more comfortable with, as long as you keep it consistent throughout the document. Formatting and grammar rules When in apa citation dissertations doubt about grammar or page format, researchers in psychology and computer science generally follow the APA style guide; biological fields use similar standards. Coursework Photosynthesis! Unfortunately, you do have to pay for the APA guide, though it is dissertations now available in gcse a less-expensive electronic edition.

Pay attention to how your document looks Use readable, clear fonts and reasonable margins, following the typical format used for similar documents. If your word processor cannot make the spacing regular between words (e.g. most versions of Microsoft Word), turn off right justification. Poor spacing makes the page look jumbled and seem incoherent, even if the apa citation for doctoral dissertations writing is not. Nearly all formal writing should simply be stapled --- anything else looks unprofessional. For instance, using a fancy cover and binding for a short paper or report is distracting and makes it difficult to photocopy the paper; such binding is necessary only for biology gcse coursework photosynthesis long papers that a staple would have trouble keeping together. At the opposite thesis blog page, extreme, it should be obvious that folding one corner is not an acceptable substitute for a staple. Authors are authors, not writers The people who perform a scientific study are called authors, never writers, even though the results are presented in a written paper. Scientific authorship includes much more than the actual writing, and some authors may well not have written any word in biology gcse photosynthesis the paper. Use last names Never refer to the authors by their first names, as if they were your friends. They are not, and even if they were, it would be inappropriate to draw attention to that circumstance.

Except in unusual cases to for doctoral dissertations, avoid ambiguity or to discuss specific people (e.g. the original founders of a field of research), first names are not even mentioned in the body of a scientific text; the last names are sufficient. Author names are keys -- spell them properly In academic writing, an author's last name is like the key in a database lookup -- if the name is misspelled (e.g. Davis for Davies), your reader will not be able to locate works by that author in the library or online. Moreover, it is extraordinarily impolite to misspell someone's name when you are discussing them; doing so shows that you have not paid much attention to photosynthesis, them or their work. How Warlike! So you should make a special effort to biology gcse photosynthesis, spell author names correctly, double and triple checking them against the original source, and essay fahrenheit 451, ensuring that you spell them the same way each time. Use appropriate pronouns Use appropriate pronouns when referring to the authors. Gcse Coursework! If there are multiple authors, use they or the authors or the authors' last names, not he or the author. Technical Education Outline! If there is only one author and you can determine the biology gcse coursework gender with great confidence, you may use he or she; otherwise use the essay author or the biology coursework photosynthesis author's last name. Referring to other texts Use double quotes around the were essay title of an article when you refer to it in the text. Italics are reserved for books or other works of biology gcse similar length.

Avoid underlining altogether --- underlining is just a way of indicating that handwritten or typewritten text should be typeset in italics, and is thus inappropriate when italics are available (as they are on any modern word processor). Be very precise when discussing an author discussing another author For better or worse, academic writing often devolves into discussions of what one author said about another author. If commenting on such controversies, you should be extremely careful about how warlike were the sioux, using ambiguous terms like his, the author, etc. Very often your reader will have no idea which of the biology photosynthesis various authors you are referring to, even though it may be clear to you. When in doubt, use the actual last names instead, even if they might sound repetitive. Avoid footnotes Footnotes should be used quite sparingly, and thesis blog page, should never be used as a way to avoid the gcse photosynthesis hard work of business plan making your text flow into a coherent narrative. Only when something genuinely cannot be made to coursework, fit into the main flow of the text, yet is somehow still so important that it must be mentioned, does it go into a footnote. Avoid direct quotes In scientific (as opposed to literary or historical) writing, direct quotes should be used only when the precise wording of the how warlike original sentences is important, e.g. if the work is so groundbreaking that the biology gcse coursework words themselves have driven research in this field. In nearly every other case, paraphrasing is more appropriate, because it lets you formulate the idea in the terms suitable for your particular paper, focusing on education essay the underlying issue rather than the way one author expressed it.

Be careful with arguments about biology coursework, grammar If you are going to criticize the grammar or spelling of an author in manufacturing writing, you should be extraordinarily careful to biology gcse photosynthesis, verify that you are correct. Apa Citation Dissertations! Reading a long rant from an American about how a person of British upbringing has supposedly misspelled words like utilisation, or vice versa, can be quite painful. There is gcse no need to college examples, mention explicitly reading the paper A lot of students use phrases like while reading this paper, I . and In this paper the authors . . Try to coursework photosynthesis, avoid this redundancy. If you use the word author you need not also use paper, and vice versa. Similarly, it is clear that whatever you discovered about the paper, you discovered while reading the paper; we do not need to for doctoral, be reminded of this. Academic writing is always about papers and authors, and thus those topics should only be discussed when they are relevant. Discussing existing work Whenever you bring up an existing piece of research, whether it is your own or someone else's, there is a standard way of doing it properly. First you say what the research showed, then you say what its limitations are, and then you say how your own work is going to overcome those limitations.

I.e., say what has been done, what has not been done, and how you are going to do some of biology gcse coursework what has not been done. If you are doing a literature review rather than an company business plan original research paper, you just describe what you think should be done, rather than what you plan to gcse coursework photosynthesis, do. Unless you want to make an enemy, you should always mention something positive about existing work before exploring the limitations, and you should always assume that the college narrative examples person you are discussing will read what you wrote. Of course, sometimes there is a good reason to make an enemy, e.g. to draw attention to gcse coursework, yourself by technical education essay attacking someone famous, but you should be sure to choose your enemies wisely. Discussing proposed work In a research proposal, it is never acceptable to announce only biology coursework photosynthesis, that you are planning to study topic X. In the context of research, studying is college a vague and unbounded task, with no criterion for success and no way to tell if you are getting anywhere. Studying is something you do in biology gcse coursework a course, where someone can tell you what to focus on and can test you to see if you got the how warlike essay right answer; research is gcse not like that. The Sioux Essay! In research, you need to spell out the specific questions you are going to try to answer, the specific phenomena that need explanations, and so on -- it's up to you to define the question and the methods, and until you've done so, it's not research, just idle speculation. Discussion/future work In the discussion sections of a research paper, be sure to discuss all topics that the biology coursework audience expected to manufacturing business plan, see in the paper, even if you yourself do not believe them to be relevant. The reader is more likely to assume that you have been sloppy about your literature review than to gcse coursework photosynthesis, assume you knew about the were the sioux work but believed it not to be relevant. Page restrictions can help here --- they provide a good excuse for omitting topics that you do not believe to be relevant.

In a longer article or thesis without page limits you have no choice but to address the issue and explicitly state why the topic is biology coursework not relevant despite the common belief that it is. Bibliographies Students often seem to think that bibliographies are mysterious, tricky things with rules far too complex to understand or remember. Although there is a vast array of different bibliographic formats, the for doctoral dissertations underlying principles are actually not complicated at all. Simply put, all bibliographies must have a certain basic minimum standard of information in order to fulfill their function of allowing people to locate the specific item of reference material you cite. Photosynthesis! In particular, every bibliography entry needs an author, date, and education essay, title, every journal article absolutely must have a volume and gcse coursework photosynthesis, page numbers, and thesis, every conference paper must have the title of the conference proceedings, the page numbers, and some indication of who published it. Without having every bit of this basic information, there is no way to be sure that readers can find the one specific article that you are discussing. Conversely, you should not include anything not necessary or useful for locating the article, such as the cost of reprints. As long as the correct information is included, there are many acceptable bibliography formats, though note that in all cases each entry ends in a period. Citations The bibliography or reference list in an academic paper must consist of precisely those sources that you cite in the text, without any extra sources and without omitting any. Each citation must provide enough information for the reader to find the correct source in the bibliography; beyond that, any number of citation formats will do unless there is photosynthesis some specific standard you are told to technical, follow. One common approach is to use author-date citations like (Smith, Wu, and Tong 2008), but other approaches such as numbering the bibliography entries and then using bracketed or superscript numbers are also fine.

If using numeric citations with brackets, note that there must always be a space before the first bracket, as in . known [1], ( not . known[1]). If using author-date citations, you must remember that any item in gcse coursework photosynthesis parentheses does not exist , as far as the how warlike grammar of the sentence is biology gcse coursework concerned, and thus it cannot be used as part of the sentence. Thus the rule is simply to put the company business plan parentheses around the part that would be acceptable to omit when reading aloud, as in Carlin (1972) showed that. or . as seen in rats (Carlin 1972). ( not (Carlin 1972) showed that. and not . as seen in photosynthesis rats Carlin (1972).). It is usually best to have only a single level of parentheses, because multiple parentheses start to distract from the main text. Thus I would prefer has been established (but for a counterexample see Johnson, 1905) to how warlike the sioux essay, has been established (but for biology photosynthesis a counterexample see Johnson (1905)). I and we Writing standards disagree about whether to use I and we (and their various forms) in college academic work. Some argue that those personal pronouns distract from what should be objective and scientifically valid without recourse to any particular speaker, or even that they just do not sound scientific. Biology Gcse Photosynthesis! Others argue that omitting I and technical essay, we results in awkward, passive sentences rather than direct We did X sentences. Personally, I believe that academic writing should use personal pronouns whenever what is being reported was an arbitrary and biology gcse, specific choice made by a human being, or for opinions or personal judgment, precisely because these pronouns emphasize that a human was involved in the work. When reporting universal scientific facts or observations, I would not use personal pronouns, because any reasonable observer would have reported similar results and thus there is no need to emphasize the role of the authors.

Thus, personally, I believe that I and we have their place in academic writing, i.e., to emphasize the human element where appropriate; in other circumstances I would discourage their use. Please note that I happen to disagree with a few of the rules commonly accepted for were the sioux English text, and in the text on this page I happily use my own rules instead. Biology Gcse Photosynthesis! You might wish to follow the accepted usage in such cases, though I would much rather everyone used my own much better rules as listed below. Manufacturing Company! If you do agree to gcse photosynthesis, join my one-man campaign to fix the English language, I cannot accept any responsibility for points deducted by less enlightened folks. :-) Punctuation after quotations In American English (and in some cases for British English), punctuation following a bit of technical education quoted text is traditionally placed inside the quotation. However, I consider that rule an biology gcse coursework egregious violation of the whole notion of quotation, i.e. an college narrative essay examples obvious bug in the English language. For example, if I am quoting someone who said that life is hard, I always put the biology photosynthesis comma outside the quotation mark because they themselves did not necessarily have a pause when they said it; in were fact, they probably had a full stop (which would be written as a period). Accepted American usage is to write life is hard, but the computer programmer in me just cannot be convinced to make such an obvious semantic error. Spaces around dashes An em-dash is a long dash, longer than an en-dash and a hyphen. The traditional formatting for an em-dash does not use any spaces, as in coursework life is hard---then you die.

However, I myself much prefer to critical fahrenheit 451, put a space before and after the dash. Without the spaces the dash appears to be connecting two words like hard---then, which makes no grammatical sense. Grammatically, the function of the dash is to separate and coursework, connect phrases or clauses, not words, and I prefer to company, make that visually clear by putting spaces around the dash. Again, in my opinion the accepted usage is coursework a bug in the language. Dangling prepositions Officially, it is an error to end a sentence with a preposition, as in they arrived at the place they were heading to. However, in practice it is manufacturing company business plan often very difficult and awkward to reword sentences to biology coursework photosynthesis, avoid dangling prepositions. Thus I consider this rule to blog page, be optional at best. Serial commas In Britain and some other less-enlightened countries, the comma is gcse photosynthesis often omitted before an 'and' in blog a list. Biology Coursework Photosynthesis! For instance, they will write of ham, chips and eggs, rather than ham, chips, and eggs. I consider this an appalling, confusing construction, because it meaninglessly groups the last two items in the list together.

Lists are generally meant to be collections of equals, so there should be just as many separators between chips and college essay, eggs as between ham and chips. In many cases, omitting the biology gcse coursework photosynthesis serial comma is ambiguous. Moreover, in the very rare case where adding the comma is ambiguous, the sentence should be rewritten anyway. Oxford University Press, at narrative essay examples, least, agrees with me; see the Wikipedia serial comma entry. Again, this insistence on using appropriate syntax is probably driven by biology coursework the computer programmer in apa citation me, but I think all right-thinking people should be offended whenever a serial comma is omitted. Commas after i.e. and e.g. Many grammar books state that a comma is always required after i.e. and e.g. used in gcse photosynthesis a sentence, as in sentences often contain spelling errors, i.e., words spelled incorrectly. The inspiration for this rule is that such abbreviations should be mentally expanded to the English translation of the technical education essay Latin phrase for gcse which they stand (i.e. translating to that is, and e.g. translating to for example, which in apa citation itself is an important distinction to know).

However, these terms come up very often in formal writing, and in many cases I consider it inappropriate to add symbolic pauses (i.e. commas) around them. Biology! Such pauses break up the flow of the technical education essay outline sentence, and gcse coursework photosynthesis, modern readers treat the abbreviations just as they would any other word, without internally translating them to how warlike the sioux essay, Latin phrases and then English phrases. Thus in many cases I prefer to biology gcse photosynthesis, omit the comma after the examples abbreviation, and sometimes also the one before it. Some people, even more pedantic than I, disagree.
